Why Willpower Isn’t the Problem (And What Actually Helps)

When a task keeps slipping, it’s easy to decide you just need more willpower. Usually the real issue is friction: the task is vague, big, boring, or buried under ten other things.

Reduce the friction, not your self-respect

Instead of pushing harder, make the first step smaller and more obvious. ‘Do taxes’ becomes ‘find the login email’. ‘Clean the kitchen’ becomes ‘put the bowls in the dishwasher’.

Change the setting

Put the thing you want to do in plain sight and the thing you want to avoid out of reach. Set a short timer. Work next to a friend, even virtually. Small environmental nudges beat heroic effort.

Motivation often follows action, not the other way around. Start tiny, and let momentum do the rest.
